Scoring and Pass/Fail
Overview
Section titled “Overview”A form can grade itself. There are two separate systems for this, and it is worth keeping them apart in your head:
- Score turns answers into points, and the submission gets a total, a maximum, and a percentage.
- Evaluation marks an individual answer Pass, Fail or Neutral.
They are independent. A question can be scored without being evaluated, or evaluated without being scored, or both. Scoring answers “how well did this go overall”, while evaluation answers “is this specific answer acceptable”.
Neither one needs a formula. Formulas are for arithmetic you define yourself; scoring is built in. Where the two meet is that a formula referencing a non-numeric question uses that question’s score as its value — see Formulas.
Which questions can be scored or evaluated
Section titled “Which questions can be scored or evaluated”| Question type | Score | Evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Number | Yes | Yes |
| Checkbox | Yes | Yes |
| Stopwatch | Yes | Yes |
| Sensor | Yes | Yes |
| Confirm | Yes | No |
Both live on segment tabs in the question editor, next to Details.
Scoring
Section titled “Scoring”Checkbox questions
Section titled “Checkbox questions”The Score tab lists every option with a points box. Type the points each option is worth. If the question allows multiple selections, every selected option’s score is added together.
Each option also has an Exclude from score toggle in its row menu. An excluded option contributes nothing and its points box is disabled — use it for a “not applicable” option that should not count either way.
Number, Stopwatch and Sensor questions
Section titled “Number, Stopwatch and Sensor questions”These are scored by condition rather than by option, because there is no fixed list of answers. Add a rule, choose an operator (equals, greater than, less than, between, and so on), give it a value, and set the points.
Rules are tested in order and the first rule that matches wins. Stopwatch values are compared in seconds.
Confirm questions
Section titled “Confirm questions”A Confirm question has one score for confirmed and one for unconfirmed.
The maximum, and the percentage
Section titled “The maximum, and the percentage”WorkWizard works out the highest score each question could have earned and adds those up to get the maximum the submission is measured against:
- Checkbox, multiple selections allowed: the sum of every positive option.
- Checkbox, single selection: the highest single option.
- Number, Stopwatch, Sensor: the highest points of any rule.
- Confirm: the greater of confirmed and unconfirmed.
Bonus question (a checkbox on the Score tab) sets that question’s maximum to zero. It can still earn points, so a bonus question raises the score without raising the total it is measured against, and a submission can finish above one hundred percent.
Where the score appears
Section titled “Where the score appears”On a submitted form:
- The submission header shows
score / maximum (percentage%). - Each scored question shows its own
score / maximum (percentage%)beside the answer. - Elsewhere, where no percentage is calculated, a question shows only what it
contributed,
+2in green or-1in red. A contribution of zero is never shown. - A section header shows the subtotal for the questions inside it.
Scoring can be switched off for a whole form with Disable Scoring on the form’s page, which is the right answer for a form where points would be meaningless.
Evaluation (Pass/Fail)
Section titled “Evaluation (Pass/Fail)”Checkbox questions: pass or fail
Section titled “Checkbox questions: pass or fail”The Evaluation tab lists every option with a Pass / Fail / Neutral dropdown.
The rule for the question as a whole is deliberately strict: if any selected option is marked Fail, the question fails. Otherwise, if any selected option is marked Pass, the question passes. If neither, it is Neutral.
Number, Stopwatch and Sensor questions: pass or fail
Section titled “Number, Stopwatch and Sensor questions: pass or fail”Same condition rows as scoring: an operator, a value, and Pass, Fail or Neutral. Every rule is checked. Any matching Fail beats a matching Pass, and if no rule matches at all the answer is Neutral.
Neutral is not a quiet pass. It means “no opinion”, and it draws no highlight, so a question that should visibly fail needs a Fail rule written for it. A single “pass when the temperature is at or below forty” rule leaves every reading above forty as Neutral rather than failing it.
Show Pass/Fail While Filling
Section titled “Show Pass/Fail While Filling”By default an evaluation is only visible after the fact. Turn on Show Pass/Fail While Filling on the form’s page and WorkWizard highlights each question as it is answered, green for a pass and red for a fail, while the person is still filling the form in.
This is what turns evaluation from a reporting feature into a correction feature: the person holding the phone sees the problem at the moment they enter it, instead of a manager finding out the next morning.
On the finished submission
Section titled “On the finished submission”Whether or not the setting above is on, a submitted form shows a green Pass or red Fail badge next to every evaluated question. A Neutral answer gets no badge, which is the same reason a Neutral rule draws no highlight while filling: Neutral means the form has no opinion about that answer.
